Camo comes to the Microsoft Store2023-09-28T16:00:00+01:00Aidan Fitzpatrickhttps://reincubate.com/blog/camo-microsoft-store/Camo comes to the Microsoft Store

We announced at Microsoft Build this summer that Camo’s coming to the Microsoft Store, and here it is: Camo Studio is now live in Store. This coincides with the release of Camo Studio 2.1 for Windows, which brings localisation into 12 new languages, an admin-less install, new onboarding and learning resources, and a host of fixes and improvements. You can now capture incredible video and add next-gen AI and adjustment features to your webcam, iPhone or Android’s camera — all with a single click from the Store.

[figure:i/camo-microsoft-store.png|Camo Studio in the Microsoft Store.|700x393]

I’d like to take a moment to dive into why we’re doing this.

First, we want to ensure Camo’s features delight users, and just work, wherever they choose to run it. Part of addressing that is by ensuring Camo feels like an intuitive extension of the video capabilities of each user’s PC. With its beautiful Fluent Design interface, Camo Studio for Windows is purpose-built for Windows, with each feature’s UX designed specifically for the platform. Just as the app itself is native, it supports a range of incredible hardware with cutting-edge Windows APIs and tooling, to ensure that it’s able to deliver fast, power-efficient performance and immersive AI features on a very broad range of PCs.

We’ve also sought to make discovering Camo as seamless as possible by bringing it to the user, where and when they need it. Just as we seek to help users fluently create great video, we want them to be fluent in finding it, and making Camo even more discoverable and accessible by bringing it to the Microsoft Store is an obvious next step. Creators and professionals around the world choose Windows as their go-to platform for their craft, and we’re thrilled to unlock a new path for people to discover Camo through the Microsoft Store.

These aspects touch on two of our core values: creating user delight and “it just works”. Another, which we take very seriously is integrity. Integrity that lays at the heart of our decision to publish to the Microsoft Store.

Integrity of product. In bringing Camo to the Microsoft Store we’ve not had to reduce its functionality; it’s the full, canonical Camo experience, every bit as powerful and easy to use as before. It can be hard to bring sophisticated, innovative products to software stores as their sandboxing sometimes caters only to APIs required by more prosaic products, but we found a straightforward path here.

Integrity of experience. The Microsoft Store is convenient, and easy for users to search and install from. The integrated auto-update mechanism will ultimately deliver users a smoother, more convenient experience. Further, enabling delivery through the Store has been a catalyst for our work to remove the need for administrator rights to install Camo. This, along with additional benefits like automatic Smart Screen approval and not needing a separate installer, will further improve experiences. Finally, delivery through the Store brings with it APIs and opportunities to integrate more closely with Windows workflows, laying a strong foundation for some of the future features on Camo’s roadmap.

Integrity of presentation. As a thoughtfully built, polished app, Camo thrives in editorial environments. Since its launch, Camo has benefitted from featuring and strong reviews. Case in point, Camo’s iPad experience is currently the #1 iPad app in Japan. Now, the Microsoft Store provides a structured context for Camo to be presented alongside its user reviews, editorial plaudits, and our introductory video content. Not compromising in how we showcase Camo and its capabilities – from AI to accessibility – is important.

Integrity of behaviour. The Microsoft Store serves to underline the commitment we have to our users. With sandboxing, display of permissions, curation, and reviews, it combines a set of features that demonstrate Camo behaves – and will continue to behave – in a secure, reliable and trustworthy manner. And it’s now just about how the software operates. In building our partnership with Microsoft, its team has consistently been considerate, accessible and supportive. Across meetings in London, Seattle, and remotely, I’ve been impressed by the consistency of the culture and values shared across dozens of individuals. I’ve particularly enjoyed meeting the team behind Store and learning their vision for it.

I hope you enjoy Camo Studio via the Microsoft Store. And well… as Camo’s new there, don’t forget to leave a review. Kind user feedback goes a long way! ❤️
Camo 2.1.0.10439 release notes2023-09-27T00:00:00+01:00Aidan Fitzpatrickhttps://reincubate.com/support/camo/release-notes/2/#2.1.0.104395 improvements, 5 fixes, 2 features
Today’s update brings localisation into 11 new languages, alongside new onboarding and learning resources.

Today, we’re bringing the Camo experience to a new platform – iPad – with powerful new streaming and multi-source picture-in-picture (PiP) features. Camo Studio for iPad is another step in removing friction for creators, making it easy for anyone to create great content with the tools they feel more confident with, irrespective of their experience. You can now:

Connect a pro camera and mic to your iPad and stream on the move, or simultaneously record to built-in storage or a connected USB/SD card.

Stream console games with a capture card to Twitch, YouTube or elsewhere, with PiP, web overlays, and integrated stream controls including chat.

Connect your iPad to your camera or Switch or DSLR via a dongle and use it as a bigger screen / monitor.

Do all three simultaneously, achieving things it previously took a traditional “computer” setup to do, but with only an iPad – or iPad Mini. The iPad is a computer, after all.

Camo Studio for iPad is free. As in, totally free, and we have no plans to change that.

To get started, you'll need an iPad that can run iPadOS 17 with an A12 or newer. An M1 or M2 chip is required for Camo to stream or record while backgrounded, but all of the other functionality works great without.

Camo Studio for iPad isn’t Camo as you know it: we've taken the opportunity to bring some features forward from the roadmap while holding – for now – some others. Most significantly, Camo now allows for use of several video feeds at a time, from the iPad’s internal camera or from external connected webcams, cameras or capture cards. Camo also now allows use of the iPad’s screen as a video source, so users can superimpose camera inputs over footage of apps or games being used on their iPads.

We’ve included Camo’s Portrait, Privacy, and Replace background modes, and added a new one: “Remove”, which allows a user to remove their background so that they could superimpose themselves on another camera feed or source. These video sources can be configured to various shapes and sizes, and we expect to build on this in future. Users can use animated replaced backgrounds for the entire canvas, or just for the replaced background on a given camera, and Camo now includes a bundled gallery of neat backgrounds.

Camo Studio for iPad’s canvas lets you capture in resolutions including 4K and 1440p, and aspects from 16:9 to 9:16, and it’ll intelligently configure your devices to perform their best for the set canvas size. Just as external cameras and capture cards can be connected, Camo Studio for iPad allows for external mics or audio mixers to be connected. We’ve particularly enjoyed using Elgato capture cards, webcams and mics, and recommend them for making the most of Camo Studio for iPad.

[figure:i/camo-ipad-input-output.png|Streaming from a console using your iPad is one of many use-cases for Camo Studio.|700x393]

Camo’s Auto-framing is live and well in Camo Studio for iPad, as is the Spotlight effect, the Filter gallery (and library of default filters), and the rotation and mirroring controls. All of this can be brought together with the new streaming functionality, allowing users to easily connect to Twitch, YouTube, RTMP and other services to stream and – if desired – simultaneously record their content. Content can be recorded to the iPad’s local storage, or to a connected USB pen drive or SD card. Users will likely want a capable USB-C hub or dock for this.

Critical to streaming is the use of web overlays, and Camo Studio for iPad supports these. Just as Camo scenes created in the PC or Mac version of Camo Studio can be imported into iPad, one can also create a new scene using just a URL. Users familiar with StreamElements, Overlays.uno, or many similar services will feel at home with this. Camo Studio for iPad also introduces “Stream panels”, which lets users embed web-based control panels. These can be used to access and interact with Twitch or YouTube chat live, or to introduce entirely new, custom ways of controlling stream or recording elements over the web. There’s a lot to explore here.

Finally, it wouldn’t be an iPad product without pencil support. Camo Studio for iPad has a neat little pencil control, allowing users to draw over or annotate their content in a familiar way. In the industry this is known as telestration, but let’s just stick to “drawing” for now!

[figure:i/camo-ipad-markup-toolbar.png|Camo Studio makes the most of features native to the iPad, such as the markup toolbar.|700x525]

It’s not yet possible to do everything we want to do on iPad, but the release of iPadOS 17 has provided what we needed to get started. We’ve had to creatively solve a huge number of challenges to make this happen, and we're still beavering away at solving the last few. We expect that scene editing on iPad, virtual camera support, Camo mobile support, and mixing multiple audio sources, will come in due course, as will some entirely new features.

As I wrote in the Camo manifesto, we’re working to open Camo to multiple video sources and streaming services, deepen our integrations with platforms, chipsets and cameras to ensure those with unique capabilities really shine, and to allow others to extend and build on top of Camo. We’ve more to do on this journey, but Camo Studio for iPad represents another big step. Some of the beta testers described Camo Studio for iPad as “OBS for iPad”, and that was great feedback to receive.

I hope you’re excited by what you see in Camo Studio for iPad. Launching on day one of a significant mobile platform update is never easy! We’d love to read about your experiences with it and to learn what you’d like to see us add as we continue to evolve the product.

<!--
In combination with this launch, we’re also extending the [Camo Community] with the launch of a Discord server, where you can meet some of the team and mix with other users to learn and share alike. We’ll be expanding our existing regular Zoom drop-ins for users to include regular drop-in calls on Discord, too. We’d love to see you: you can sign up for [an invitation to all of this here].

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are just around the corner, and iPhone Backup Extractor fully supports them both. I’ve written this for the last 16 years, so let’s skip that and get to what’s new.

We shipped eight updates to iPhone Backup Extractor last year, along with a host of enhancements to some of the cloud components that power it. We also completed a long-running piece of design work for the next iteration of iPhone Backup Extractor’s visual identity, and I’ll be excited to see components of that launching incrementally over the rest of the year. We didn’t ship version 8: in part, this was because we’ve continued to develop new patterns and techniques in Camo, and I’ve wanted to see them realised fully before they come to iPhone Backup Extractor. Last year we had colleagues moving back and forth between projects, but as of earlier this year, we’ve reverted to team members dedicated to each product.

This year’s been busy. I returned to the west coast over the summer, meeting friends and partners at Microsoft, Apple, and elsewhere. I had the opportunity to present Camo at Microsoft’s Build conference, and got to see Camo on stage at Apple’s WWDC for Apple Design Awards, both of which we wrote about earlier. It was great to hear more on how our work has touched users around the world, and to have the opportunity to meet more of them.

[gallery:Plenty of swag – including an Apple Design Awards special – and a sneak peek at the Vision Pro.]

The trip was unusual compared to my earlier ones, as my 9 month old son joined me. Not a year old, but doing well for developer events. Slaven and Ben of Penbook were particularly kind in making faces at him, offering a helping hand, and – of course – sharing tales of their experiences in the developer ecosystem.

We’ve enjoyed seeing Apple and Microsoft partnering up on the preview Apple Devices app which came to the Microsoft Store earlier this year and – of course – iPhone Backup Extractor supports backups made by it.

As ever, thanks for your support, and for following along the iPhone Backup Extractor journey. I have a feeling some of this year’s updates will be a little special!
Camo 2.0.5.10050 release notes2023-07-25T00:00:00+01:00Aidan Fitzpatrickhttps://reincubate.com/support/camo/release-notes/2/#2.0.5.100501 fixes
Today’s update to Camo Studio fixes an issue with notifications.
It’s an exciting time for Camo and our users. The release of Camo 2 in March, with support expanded to hundreds of new devices, while introducing new features and improved performance, was the result of months of problem-solving teamwork, and marked an important milestone for the app. Since then, there have been more events and news than we’ve had time to properly talk about.

In May, Camo was featured in a keynote at the Microsoft Build developers conference, with a demo of how we're using cutting-edge tech to power the app's latest features on Windows. Also while we were there, we announced that Camo will be coming to the Microsoft Store later in 2023.

In June, Camo was recognised for its product design and innovation by being named an Apple Design Awards finalist.

And in the past two months, we announced that we'll be bringing Camo to Windows on ARM later this year. This is part of our broader efforts to marry cutting-edge machine learning models and tooling with the latest in AI hardware from Qualcomm and ARM.

These are certainly busy days, but it feels like the right moment to share a bit more about what all these events and announcements mean for the state of Camo. Looking back, we’re hugely proud of how far the app has come in just a few short years. Looking forward, we’re seeing it truly soar.

Camo 2

Three years ago, we conceived of Camo as a tool to help capture professional-quality video for meetings and presentations, streaming and content creation. Our founding premise was simple – to give users control over their smartphone’s advanced cameras, enabling them to capture, stream and record amazing video. Camo would work seamlessly with the video apps they used, while being fully optimised for each new generation of hardware.

With the launch of Camo 2, we made a huge leap in bringing better video and greater control to whoever needs it. Users could now access Camo’s capabilities with just about any device they chose, including built-in cameras, webcams, DSLRs and action cams. From a budget webcam to a professional DSLR costing many thousands, if it could be connected to a computer, Camo could give it superpowers.

We also introduced brand new functionality like Spotlight, Virtual green screen and Auto Framing to Camo’s array of features, all while delivering improved efficiency through hardware acceleration on both Windows and macOS. It’s been amazing to hear the response from our users, to read the reviews, and to see how Camo 2 has been helping creatives and other professionals craft amazing content, such as these fantastic YouTube tutorials and reviews by Darkened Cyrus aimed at helping new creators master their equipment and setup.

[gallery:The feedback we’ve been getting from reviewers, users, and creators alike for Camo 2. ]

The new Camo app makes even your crappy webcam look pretty good https://t.co/pARS49QMdw pic.twitter.com/eZmGLpCdup
— The Verge (@verge) March 16, 2023

At each step of the way, it’s our users – professionals, educators, creators, streamers, and others – who have helped shape and inform Camo’s journey. So as we work to make the app even better, we’re taking steps to strengthen the community that has grown around it.

To start, we’ve introduced livestreamed Camo Conversation and Camo Classroom events, giving Camo users the opportunity to listen and pitch questions to panels of video experts on topics from improving audio to perfecting lighting to planning and presenting content.

We’ve also debuted a referral program, enabling monthly and annual Camo Pro subscribers to share free trials with their network. It’s all part of that founding premise - to bring better video to everyone who wants it, using the tech they already have.

Camo at Microsoft Build

A core principle reflected in the app is our dedication to building the best experience we can, on every platform. On Windows, this meant creating a fresh, Fluent Design interface built on the latest Microsoft APIs, and packed with a full complement of video adjustments and effects. Our community of Windows users loved it, Qualcomm included it in their keynote at Computex, and Microsoft invited us to its Build developers conference to show other developers what we were doing.

That’s why in late May, Camo took centre stage in Seattle, and Aidan, our CEO, treated the Build audience to a preview of what’s coming next to Camo on the platform. As he demonstrated some powerful new features, Aidan also talked about how our team is working now to design a new generation of Camo capabilities, using a combination of new tools and next-generation hardware. In a minute, we’ll tell you more about what has us so excited about AI imaging and Neural Processing Units (NPUs).

[figure:i/aidan-ms-build-demo.png|Aidan demoing Camo on the many big screens at Microsoft Build.|700x393]

Camo and the Apple Design Awards

Next, ahead of this year’s WWDC, Camo was named an Apple Design Award finalist for the first time. It was particularly special to be recognised in the Innovation category, a value that’s guided us from the beginning, when we first designed the app for release on macOS and iOS. And we’re not done innovating on those platforms. With the framework updates coming in this year’s macOS Sonoma and iOS 17, we can’t wait to keep pushing Camo forward, making sure that Camo remains the best choice for our community of Mac users.

[figure:i/camo-apple-design-awards-finalist.png|Camo’s icon amongst those of the other Apple Design Awards finalists.|700x393]

Camo on the Microsoft Store

The launch of Camo 2 and the major developers conferences are behind us, but we’re not resting on our digital laurels. For one thing, we’re busy finding ways to put amazing video into even more hands. Our next step will be making Camo even more discoverable and accessible by bringing it to the Microsoft Store later in 2023. Creators and professionals from around the world choose Windows as their go-to platform for their craft, and we can’t wait for more people to discover Camo more easily through the Microsoft Store.

Camo, NPUs & AI tools

Wherever they download it from, we know that users will appreciate Camo’s speed and stability. In designing Camo 2, we worked closely with AMD, Intel and NVIDIA to support their latest and greatest hardware, and engineered new, more efficient ways for the app to run, including offloading some of the processing burden to the cameras themselves.

What we have in the works now is going to blow them away. Thanks to the huge promise posed by Neural Processing Units (NPUs), new chip architecture, and AI image analysis, we’re seeing Camo attain a whole new level of performance, achievable with a bit of help from our friends at Qualcomm, ARM and Microsoft.

[video:https://f.reincubate.com/v/ms-build-2023-camo-segment.mp4|Camo’s segment at Microsoft Build 2023. Check out the full session, Shaping the future of work with AI, where Camo is featured from (1:27:48).]

One of the most exciting developments is the NPU, a hardware accelerator dedicated to machine learning workflows. What Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) have done for graphics-related computations – making them faster and more efficient without monopolising a device’s resources – NPUs will do for AI-related computations, but with even greater power.

Relying on this new dedicated hardware will provide staggering improvements in efficiency for machine learning workloads, resulting in both faster image analysis, better overall app performance and better device battery life, with more resources left over for the user to apply to other tasks. The initial performance stats for Qualcomm’s NPUs and ARM’s chips are truly impressive: running 15x faster than GPU, and 20x faster than CPU in our tests. With speed like this, our Camo product roadmap becomes more like a flightplan.

Having such cutting-edge hardware to work with is exciting, but taking full advantage of its potential requires good engineering and even better tooling. Microsoft’s introduction of the Olive ML toolchain plays a big part in unlocking Camo’s ability to work with these technologies, letting our team build on top of their knowledge of existing formats and techniques, such as ONNX and model optimisation and delivery. Over the coming months, we’ll be working to put this to use in new in-app functionality that we hope will delight our users and give them even more tools for achieving incredible video.

We can’t wait to show you more of the exciting additions coming down the pipeline, and to tell you more about what we’re doing to make Camo better on every platform.
It’s going to be a busy summer for us, but we’ll be sure to take the time to update the blog with the latest developments. If you’d like to receive Camo announcements by email, you can easily subscribe here.

As always, thanks for joining us on the Camo journey. We couldn’t do it without you.
Camo 2.0.3.9881 release notes2023-06-27T00:00:00+01:00Aidan Fitzpatrickhttps://reincubate.com/support/camo/release-notes/2/#2.0.3.98818 improvements, 11 fixes, 1 features
Today's release includes a few bug fixes and improvements.
